Many parts of the world have endemic cases of taeniasis and cysticercosis. It's possible for outbreaks to go unnoticed until consequences appear. West New Guinea saw a significant cysticercosis outbreak in 1978 as a result of the importation of sick pigs. The epidemic of burn victims who had been injured while sleeping near fireplaces due to neurocysticercosis-induced seizures led to the diagnosis of the illness.
